You turn heading numbering on and off for each heading level in Tools/Outline Numbering.

When I inserted a new table of contents the heading numbers got connected with the heading text, i.e., 1Heading. To solve this you add a space in the Separator/After field in Tools/Outline numbering for the headings that are not being generated correctly in the table of contents.

which is called from onCreate(Bundle) as:

setOrientationView(getResources().getConfiguration().orientation);

and from onConfigurationChanged(Configuration newConfig) as:

setOrientationView(newConfig.orientation);

In order for onConfigurationChanged(Configuration) to be called when sliding the screen open I had to add:

android:configChanges="orientation|keyboardHidden"

to the activity tag in AndroidManifest.xml which resulted in the following activity tag:
